CVS requires ID for nail polish remover

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

One of the active ingredients in nail polish remover is acetone. It's also a component used in the illegal manufacture of methamphetamine.

CVS drug stores is requiring anyone wanting to purchase acetone-based nail polish remover show identification in an attempt to curb the making of the illegal drug.

The drug store chain is also limiting the number of bottles of remover that can be purchased.

CVS issued the following statement to FOX News:

"Because acetone is an ingredient used in the illegal manufacture of methamphetamine, we recently implemented a policy that a valid ID must be presented to purchase acetone-containing products such as nail polish remover. Our policy also limits the sale of these products in conjunction with other methamphetamine precursors and is based on various regulations requiring retailers to record sales of acetone."

The store policy was first rolled out in New England several weeks ago and is now in effect nationwide.
