Gas station thieves 'slide' into cars

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Police across the country are warning people who pump their own gas to be on the lookout for thieves targeting their vehicles.

There have been at least seven robberies in New York City of luxury vehicles by what investigators are calling "sliders."

The thieves pull up in a car next to the gas station customer and while that person is distracted they open a door and grab items like a purse and quickly take off.

In one case on Staten Island, the thieves took off with the vehicle.

Michael Tewflick was speaking with his brother outside of his car at a Sunoco station in Graniteville when the thieves jumped in and took off with his car.

The car was later recovered in Newark, NJ., after Tewflick used the 'find my iPhone' app to track the vehicle.

Police warn that you should always lock your car even if you're nearby.
