PHOENIX (AP) - A man has been arrested for allegedly stealing more than two dozen coin dispensers from convenience stores in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Phoenix police said Tuesday that 31-year-old Bryan Simon is accused of taking 27 dispensers in the past 12 months.

They say Simon admitted to the thefts and claimed he needed the money to buy drugs.

Police say Simon allegedly began stealing the coin dispensers in July 2012 and took at least 12 machines between November and December from Circle K stores.

The thefts began again last month when police say 15 coin machines were stolen in an 11-day span.

Police estimate the total loss in the thefts at $17,000 in coins and the value of the dispensers.

It wasn't immediately clear Tuesday if Simon had an attorney.
