People Protest Santa Ana Police Department

Posted: Updated:

About 30 showed up to protest the Santa Ana Police Department.  They question whether the 5 deadly police shootings in the city this year were justified.

"We want to let Santa Ana Police know that they are out of control and that we want them to stop killing the citizens of Santa Ana.  This is the 5th person they've killed in their city this year," said Terri Teramura, a local activist.

The most recent deadly police shooting in the city happened on Tuesday.  Hans Kevin Arellano, a 22 year old father of two, was fatally shot in the chest by a female officer .

We talked to a witness who knew Arellano, he told us what he saw but asked to remain anonymous, "He was outside right here stand with his hands up straight up in the air when he was shot."

The Santa Ana Police Department says they can't specifically comment on exactly what happened in the moments before the shooting, because there is an open and ongoing investigation.

But the day after the shooting Chief Rojas said that officers are trained to use less than lethal force, unless their life is in danger.

"This must been their new excuse, to shoot someone if you interact with the police," said Terramura.

Police also said Arellano has a criminal history and was wanted in a recent burglary. Still members of the community aren't convinced Arellano should've been shot.

"It was unwarranted and unjustified.  The man came out with his hands in the air.  The officer had to have seen he was unarmed," said the anonymous witness.

The day after the shooting Chief Rojas also said there are three ongoing & simultanious investigations into this shooting.
