Jury selection, courtroom attire at issue in Victor Hill trial

Posted: Updated:
JONESBORO, Ga. -

Jury selection began Monday in the trial of Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill.

Attorneys for the prosecution allege that Sheriff Hill used his office for his own financial gain. Last Friday, prosecutors agreed to drop four theft charges against Hill, but the sheriff still faces 28 counts accusing him of theft and corruption.

One of the biggest issues is whether or not the prosecution is attempting to put evidence in that shows him improperly using county funds and county vehicles.

On Monday, Hill entered the courtroom as attorneys in the case continued to debate issues surrounding the case and which evidence can be submitted. They're also contending with how people can appear in the courtroom.

Outside of the courthouse, a handful of protesters claimed that the case against Hill is politically motivated. Hill's attorney made similar statements.

The presiding judge admonished people in the courtroom Monday, telling them that no vocal outbursts would be tolerated during the course of the trial. The judge went further saying that no one inside of the courtroom should wear any clothing that supports one side of the case or the other.

Defense attorneys asked a handful of potential jurors a battery of questions, including their views on gambling, their medical histories and whether they had strong opinions about the controversial sheriff.
