SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

Britteny Wrobel said she was walking with her one-year-old son behind her apartment near 22 Mile and Shelby Road Saturday when she was approached by a man.

"He was all nice at first," she explained. "Then he walked over and grabbed him up and took off."

Wrobel said she ran after the man and grabbed her baby back out of his arms. She immediately called police, who arrested the suspect.

"It was really good that I got him back, but it could have been worse," she said.

Jameskutty Varghese, a 47-year-old Indian national, was arraigned Monday and pleaded not guilty to an attempted kidnapping charge.

The suspect's interpreter believes the allegations stem from a cultural misunderstanding.

"From what I understand, it is a cultural thing. When he saw a small baby, he just waved to the baby, and that's what he was trying to tell me. So he really didn't intend to do anything," he said.

Varghese's bond was set at $500,000. He is locked up in the Macomb County Jail and will be back in court on August 19 for a preliminary exam.

If convicted, Varghese could lose his green card and be deported.
