Bus drivers' strike continues in Phoenix suburbs

Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - A bus strike that has idled service in suburbs east of Phoenix has entered its third day.

Negotiations between the bus drivers and the national bus company they work for ended Friday evening without any agreement. Talks could resume as early as Saturday afternoon.

The work stoppage began Thursday. Some 40 routes in Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa and Tempe are shut down, along with express routes from those cities to Scottsdale and Phoenix.

The affected routes serve some 57,000 riders daily, including many workers without cars who can't walk miles to work in the summertime heat.

Union officials say they are frustrated that talks ended Friday without little explanation.

But officials with First Transit say the union ended negotiations after insisting on a 1-year contract. The bus company has been seeking a 3-year agreement.

Routes affected:

FLASH, MERCURY, VENUS, EARTH, MARS, JUPITER, BUZZ, LINK—Main St., LINK—Arizona Ave., 30, 40, 45, 48, 56, 61, 62, 65, 66, 72, 77, 81, 96, 104, 108, 112, 120, 128, 136, 156, 184, 511, 514, 520, 521, 522, 531, 533, 535, 541 and 542.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
