EL MIRAGE, Ariz. -

A brave 7-year old was recognized for her quick thinking. The El Mirage girl was home alone with her mother when she realized something was wrong and took action.

Dispatcher: "911, what's your emergency?"
Caller: "My mom's acting really weird and she's asleep but she doesn't know. Can you come here please?"

Sofia Walters knew something was wrong when she couldn't wake her mom up. So she called 911 -- something she learned how to do in school.

Caller: "I'm trying to wake her up..." (crying)
Dispatcher: "Okay, there's help on the way for mommy, okay?"

"I was scared she was sick or something," said Sofia.

"I'm very proud of her.. very scary moments, especially for her to handle it the way she did.  I'm very proud," said Wendy Walters.

Caller: "I don't know what's wrong with her and I'm really worried and my dad is gone."

On Friday, Sophia was recognized at the El Mirage City Council meeting with the Public Safety Hero Award.

Fire crews say this was truly a life saving situation -  and encourage other parents to make sure their kids could make the call for help --  if they need too.

"Were it not for the quick actions of Sofia, the outcome could have been very different," said El Mirage Fire Chief Howard Munding.

In addition to staying calm throughout the 9-1-1 call, rescue crews say it's also important to make sure your kids know to stay on the line until help arrives -- that's something else Sofia did right too.
