Pike Nurseries: Ground Covers

Spending lots of time worrying about keeping your yard looking it's best?  You're not alone.  But sweat no longer, because the folks from Pike Nurseries have some great ideas for you when it comes to covering large areas of your yard. 

Pike's own Melodie McDanal joined Good Day on Friday to tell us about some options, from sod to ground covers, that might be just what you're looking for!

Tips from Pike Nurseries:
Cover large areas with sod or ground covers. Sod allows the area to be usable for recreation and provides a great green area. Ground covers are low maintenance and add beauty to your yard.

SOD

Zoysia

Empire Turf

  • Grows in sun and tolerates more shade than other zoysias
  • Blue-green color, dense
  • Very disease and insect resistant
  • Low water once established


El Toro

  • Grows in sun or partial shade
  • Dense, wear-resistant
  • Bluish-green color with a medium blade


Zeon

  • Referred to as the "bare-foot grass"
  • Grows in sun or partial shade
  • Bright green color
  • Disease and insect resistant



Bermuda
419

  • Full sun
  • Dark green color
  • Grows rapidly


Tifgrand

  • Full sun to partial shade
  • Dark green color
  • Finer blade than 419


Centepede

  • Full sun, partial sun
  • Dense, low growing grass
  • Goes dormant in the winter



GROUND COVERS

Mondo Grass

  • Creates a lush ground cover of dense, dark green grass-like clumps
  • Dwarf varieties available that are only half the size of the species
  • Excellent as an edging plant or tucked into rocks for a pleasing contrast.


Pachysandra

  • Evergreen foliage
  • Full to partial shade
  • 6 to 12 inches tall


Vinca Minor

  • Evergreen perennial
  • One of the best ground covers for shade
  • Violet blue flowers against small glossy green leaves
  • Clumping habit
