MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Minnesota wasted no time to celebrate the state's first same-sex marriages. The weddings started at 12:01 a.m. Thursday at Minneapolis City Hall, with Mayor R.T. Rybak among the officiants.

"We knew the day would come. We are ecstatic that it's now," said Al Giraud.

Giraud and husband Jeff Isaacson were the first same-sex male couple to legally marry in Hennepin County.

"All of the hard work, all of the effort, all of the fighting that has gone into it -- it's something you can't ignore," Isaacson said.

Across the river in St. Paul, 11 same-sex weddings were held at the Como Zoo Conservatory.

"Having 11 in 24 hours is definitely different for us," said Como's Michelle Furrer. "Eleven is a record for us."
