Consumer Reports gives 2 local hospitals high marks for surgery

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Consumer Reports rated hospitals based on how patients do during and after surgery.

It turns out, big name hospitals sometimes don't live up to their reputations, and smaller institutions can do better than you would expect.

Michigan hospitals scoring high marks include Beaumont in Troy and St. Joseph Mercy in Howell.

"We looked at 27 different categories of surgeries and combined them into an overall rating," said Doris Peter with the Consumer Reports Health Ratings Center. "We're also publishing ratings for five individual procedures. And these ratings are based on the percentage of Medicare patients who died or stayed longer than expected for their individual procedure."
