13 Ariz. hospitals ranked in top by Consumer Reports

Updated:
PHOENIX -

Consumer Reports put out it's annual list of top hospitals, but this time it's based on how patients do during and after surgery.

In the national survey, 13 hospitals in Arizona received their highest rating, including Mayo Clinic, Arrowhead Hospital, Banner Baywood Medical Center, Banner Boswell Medical Center, Banner Heart Hospital and others.

Each hospital got a score on a number of factors.

When choosing a hospital, looking at multiple data points from different sources is important because in this survey, in some cases, big name hospitals across the country scored low in areas compared to smaller hospitals.

In addition, hospitals in rural areas scored very well.

How were the ratings determined?

"They are being judged on the percentage of patients who died or stayed longer than expected for their particular procedure. So that is the measure that is calculated from the billing record and then we looked at 27 different categories of surgeries and combined those data across all 27 and then rolled that over into an overall rating for that hospital...also published ratings for five common procedures," said Doris Peter, Associate Director of Consumer Reports Health Rating Center.

The procedures included back surgery, replacements of the hip or knee, and procedures to remove blockages in arteries in the heart (angioplasty) or neck (carotid artery surgery).

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey could rescind a $1-a-year lease for a park-and-ride lot near the Lincoln Tunnel. The agency's chief of real estate and development told a committee Wednesday that it should change a deal made in 2012. Published reports have alleged that former Port Authority chairman David Samson voted to approve the lease even though his law firm did business with New Jersey Transit, which operates the park-and-ride lot.
