Day 3: Search for missing 78-year-old Newnan woman

Posted: Updated:
NEWNAN, Ga. -

The search continues for 78-year-old Eleanor Alexander, who has been missing from her Newnan home since early Saturday.  Family members say they're especially worried because Alexander suffers from dementia, and is without her medicine.

Monday's search effort is a continuance of a massive search that fanned out over parts of Newnan on Sunday. About 100 volunteers came together to scour roads and comb through wooded areas where Alexander was last seen in hopes of bringing her home safe and sound.

FOX 5 News first reported on Saturday that Alexander was last seen between 1 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. on Providence Church Road in Newnan. Search groups passed out and pinned up flyers in communities where she was last seen.

Alexander's family has taken every phone call, while friends continue to map out any route possible to track her down.  The last time she was seen was early Saturday morning, a short distance away from her home on Providence Church Road.

"The amount of people that have shown up, it's kind of overwhelming," said Becky Alexander, her daughter-in-law.  "I wasn't born in Newnan, I'm not from Newnan.  I married into Newnan, but the amount of people and the support that has come out is just amazing."

Family members describe Alexander as strong-willed and healthy.  They also say without her medication, her dementia symptoms rapidly get worse.

"I know it's three days later, but that's what we're banking on, that's what we're hoping on is that she was very healthy other than dementia," said Becky Alexander.  "That being said, she's been off her mediation for dementia for three days and that escalates things a lot."

Coweta County Sheriff Mike Yeager says they're covering a lot of ground and will continue to do that.  He asks for anyone who sees anything or thinks they may have seen anything related to the case to call authorities.

Authorities say the hardest part of the search is not knowing how much ground they have to cover.  The search continues on foot, by car and by ATV.

When she was last seen, Alexander wore a pink shirt, as well as matching pink-and-white stripe pajama pants. She is 5'3" tall and weighs about 105 pounds with a thin build. She has blue eyes and white hair.

Alexander may not respond to her name. She may also answer to "Aria" or "

Day three's search effort were ended soon after nightfall. The search for Alexander continues early Tuesday.

Nana."

Anyone who may have seen Alexander is urged to call their local law enforcement or 911 immediately.
