UFC Rankings: Big Drop for Ellenberger

Posted: Updated:

(FOX 11) If you were/are a comic-book nerd like me, you remember a large, red-armored hulking figure shouting out "Nothing can stop the Juggernaut!"

And that straight-forward, beat-me-if-you-can mentality possessed by the popular X-Men villain was apropos for Jake Ellenberger… or at least it was until Saturday night.

Because to do what Ellenberger did in his fight against Rory MacDonald after all the vitriol Ellenberger himself initiated was head scratching at best and an embarrassment at worst.

It's a big reason why even though Ellenberger didn't get dominated in any sense of the word, when it came to the Fox 11 welterweight rankings, The Juggernaut took a significant hit.  A more significant hit than he took in the actual fight anyways.

Ellenberger was dropped from fourth to eighth, below Demian Maia, Nick Diaz and Martin Kampmann who all moved up one spot respectively.

But even Robbie Lawler, who went from ninth to seventh, jumped ahead of Ellenberger after Lawler's devastating head kick knockout of Bobby Voelker.

The highlight-reel knockout got my esteemed colleague Pablo Alsina from Fox Deportes so fired up he was immediately calling for a MacDonald/Lawler matchup with the winner getting a title shot.

And while I don't totally disagree with the former UFC Espanol play-by-play man, keep in mind Voelker took the fight on two-weeks notice.

Besides that, Rory, who I kept ranked third, has unfinished business with Carlos Condit and I believe the Ruthless one could easily be talked into a rematch with Nick Diaz and vice versa.

But even if 209's finest can't be coaxed back into the octagon, are you really telling me a Robbie Lawler – Martin Kampmann matchup wouldn't get your jujubes jumping?

And finally, just know I wanted to.  I really did.

I really, really wanted to see Mighty Mouse break into my top 10 pound-for-pound rankings, but I just couldn't do it.

Demetrious Johnson was super impressive and I, like everyone else, was gushing over his determination to finish the fight despite having the decision all but locked up.

But that being said, a solid victory over a good, but not great, John Moraga just wasn't quite impressive enough to knock off Anthony Pettis or Vitor Belfort.

Both Pettis and Belfort have looked even more convincing and more impressive in smashing fighters like Donald Cerrone and Luke Rockhold who are a cut above Moraga in their respective weight classes.

Agree? Disagree? That's what the comments section below is for.

And for goodness sakes, why aren't you following me on Twitter already? @JamesDKoh for more UFC-related tweets and content.

In just hours, the feel good story of how USC football player Josh Shaw heroically saved his nephew from possibly drowning had made it's way around the world. But as quickly as the news spread, something else happened.
