"I counted on him sitting on that bench outside his door," said neighbor Diana Quattro. "I knew if I was outside he had an extra eye on everyone so it's unbelievable this happened.

He's referred to as the Mister Rogers of his Westland neighborhood, always going out of his way to help others. Now Tom Bemiss and his wife Charlene are fighting for their lives. They were attacked and stabbed by a neighbor on Van Sull. The suspect allegedly stole liquor from a nearby store, then started knocking on doors.

"From what I heard he ended up punching [Mr. Bemiss] and pulling him out the door and then stabbing him," said Quattro. "His wife tried to help her husband and he stabbed her. She was stabbed six times and she was stabbed five."

Emergency crews found the couple, in their 70's, surrounded by neighbors who came to their aide. We're told the suspect also needed medical treatment and had a history of mental issues.
