Man shot by Tempe police in drug probe identified

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - A man shot by Tempe police officers trying to serve a search warrant in a drug investigation has died at a hospital.

Police identified the man Thursday as 43-year-old John J. Wheelihan.

Detectives from special investigations/narcotics unit were in the process of serving a narcotics related search warrant at a house in Tempe about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

As officers approached the front of the home, they tried to make contact with any possible occupants inside the house.

Police say Wheelihan exited the rear of home into the backyard with a rifle and began to approach detectives.

After multiple commands to drop the weapon, police say Wheelihan raised the rifle at them and he was shot.

None of the officers were injured. Police say the shooting remains under investigation.
