Former judge Brooks Blitch reinstated to Ga. bar

ATLANTA (AP) - A former Georgia Superior Court judge once accused of fixing cases and making illegal payments to courthouse employees has been reinstated to the state bar.

The Georgia Supreme Court said in a July 1 order that 78-year-old Brooks E. Blitch III of Homerville can return to practicing law since his criminal conviction was thrown out last year.

The state's highest court disbarred Blitch after he settled a 14-count federal corruption case against him in 2009 by pleading guilty to a single charge of honest service fraud conspiracy.

A federal court overturned Blitch's conviction last year after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in an unrelated case that the charge only applies when there's evidence that a defendant accepted bribes or kickbacks. There was no such evidence in Blitch's case.
