How 'femgineers' can fight the brain drain

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Remember the thick glasses? The dorky laugh? Well, today's engineers have a whole different look.

"It's actually cool to be a female engineer," stated Poornima Vijayashanker.

Vijayashanker shook up Silicon Valley when she teamed up to create the money management website Mint. Now she's focused on her 'femgineer' blog.

"If you do a Google search for women in tech, it's flat. And then 2013, there's a big spike."

That new trend of femgineers sparked her recent visit to Tampa.

"We have a huge issue when it comes to highly skilled it workers," lamented Heather Kenyon, CEO of the Tampa Bay Technology Forum.

The hope: Tampa becomes a tech hub.

"I think that we have done an amazing job of promoting ourselves as being a place for tourism and citrus and agriculture and all kinds of things, but not for technology and not for education and we need to change that," Kenyon continued.

That means local tech companies need to hire talent from local colleges.

"They can be really effective with keeping the kids in Tampa," Vijayashanker added.

So preventing the so-called brain drain can also boost the femgineer movement here in the Bay Area.
