Cardinals fly south to Glendale: How will it affect Flagstaff?

Posted: Updated:
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -

The Arizona Cardinals is gearing up for their first training camp on Friday in Glendale. The team moved their practice to the west valley, from Flagstaff, where they've trained for the past 25 years since arriving here from Saint Louis.

Northern Arizona's economy could take a hit as a result.

We went up to Flagstaff and it's a real loss that the Cardinals are flying south to Glendale. The training camp pumped an estimated $10 million a year into Flagstaff's economy.

Plenty of space on the sidewalks. Cyclists have the streets kind of to themselves. Hotels and restaurants, not hard to get in. It used to be a lot busier when Cardinals training camp was in town.

"Well traffic is a lot less dense without having the Cardinals here, but I miss not having the guys in town," says Flagstaff resident Gene Moan.

"It is kind of unfortunate, brings so many people to the town therefore stimulates our economy. But it also eases up on traffic," says Kristen Phillips.

Downtown Flag is a lot more leisurely place these days, which is fine. But it's not fine for the bottom line.

Plenty of businesses in Flagstaff are going to miss the Cardinals, and this may surprise you, this is one of them: Sacred Rites.

Here they sell exotic musical instruments. They don't exactly cater to football fans. I walked in and found myself flat on my back.

"This whole bed is a musical instrument called the monochord, has forty strings, three octaves of the same note," says Sacred Rites' owner Kelly McCabe.

I've never experienced anything like that. So why will Sacred Rites miss the Cardinals?

"I actually had three Cardinals players three years ago try out the sound wave bed."

He can't remember which players. But they can always drive up to Flag and buy it. It's only $7,100.

He does remember the players were big, really big guys. By the way that monochord bed still available.

One thing the Flagstaff economy has, and this will not change -- cool summer weather.

High temperatures in the 80s most days -- a great getaway for anyone who wants to escape the valley's heat.
