Police warn businesses of denying service animals

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Athens-Clarke County police say they're reminding business owners to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act after citizen complaints over the past several months.

Officials said Wednesday that disabled people have told police they've been denied access to local businesses because of their service animals. In some cases, police say consumers were denied because of food safety concerns.

Police say the Americans with Disabilities Act ensures disabled citizens have full access to any business - including restaurants and other food service facilities.

Authorities say owners of service animals should carry certification with them and the animal should wear a leash if it's in training.

Police say anyone denying customers because of a service animal may be fined up to $2,000, spend up to 30 days in jail or both.
