PHOENIX -

An 8-month-old baby girl was killed Wednesday. She had burns all over her face and body. Police say her mother's boyfriend confessed to burning her with a cigarette lighter.

Police say 21-year-old Adrian Ponce admitted to burning the baby with a cigarette lighter while she was strapped in a stroller at a park on Tuesday afternoon. The next morning, Ponce told police the baby kept crying so he shook her so violently she stopped breathing.

Ponce isn't the baby's father but he's engaged to the baby's mother.

"This is absolutely horrible, there is no explanation or reason for this to have happened to this 8-month-old little girl," said Phoenix Police Officer James Holmes.

Crime scene technicians took pictures inside of the condo near 29th Street and Greenway. Detectives believe they found the cigarette lighter used to burn the baby.

Ponce lived inside this condo with his mom, his brothers and sisters, his girlfriend and her baby.

Police say other people including the baby's mom were in the house when the baby stopped breathing. Investigators are also looking into that.

Ponce was booked on child abuse charges.
