8-year-old boy hit by car; remains in critical condition

PHOENIX -

An 8-year-old boy is fighting for his life after he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle.

This happened Tuesday night when police say the boy was riding his bike with some family and friends near the intersection of 16th Street and Highland.

After making at stop at the Quik Trip, the boy crossed the street against the light when a driver heading southbound on 16th Street hit the child.

We're told the boy was knocked off the bike and was not wearing a helmet at the time.  He was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.

"The child was not wearing a helmet.. apparently he did sustain some injuries to the head which is why he is under examination," said Lt David Laslavic of the Phoenix police.

The male driver stayed at the scene and likely won't be charged because police say he did have the right of way.

"When you're using a cross walk, make sure that you don't go across when the right of way is actually to the traffic, and also you should be wearing a bicycle helmet as well," added Laslavic.

Authorities say there were no signs that the driver was speeding.  According to police, the driver refused to take a field sobriety test.  He was later ordered to give a blood sample, but the results haven't come back yet to determine if he was impaired.

No names have been released in this case.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey could rescind a $1-a-year lease for a park-and-ride lot near the Lincoln Tunnel. The agency's chief of real estate and development told a committee Wednesday that it should change a deal made in 2012. Published reports have alleged that former Port Authority chairman David Samson voted to approve the lease even though his law firm did business with New Jersey Transit, which operates the park-and-ride lot.
