Man who tussled with Mesa officer in viral video dies in jail

PHOENIX -

A man caught on camera fighting with a Mesa Police officer has died in custody.

Sheriff's investigators say Matangi Tai died in the recreation yard at the Fourth Avenue Jail on Monday.

They say he was exercising with other inmates when he collapsed. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A spokesperson for MCSO said that he had access to the air conditioned jail through an open door and water at the time of his collapse.

Tai had been booked on counts including aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.

Back in May -- a bystander captured video of him at the Circle K on Center and McKellips.

Detectives say he had been milling around and wouldn't leave the area.

When a Mesa Police officer asked him to leave, investigators say tai wouldn't obey his commands.

They say he rambled on about being at the store to get his prescriptions. At one point, he took a swing at the officer.

Fellow officers helped subdue the man with the use of tasers.

Tai was also arrested nearly a year ago in a separate confrontation with police. He was accused of stealing beer from a gas station and assaulted the officer as he was taken into custody.

An investigation into his cause of death is ongoing.
