2013 limited edition Corvette swept away in raging wash

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

Some storm clean-ups are going to be tougher than others. Remember this sports car whose driver took a wild ride down a flooded wash?

It may not look like it, but this guy who was driving the now ruined Corvette -- he's lucky.

This north Phoenix neighborhood near 40th Street and Shea looked like this Sunday morning as heavy runoff from nearby mountains filled the usually dry wash.

"It was like a rapid, it was unbelievable," says resident Marissa Creager.

Neighbors say most drivers turned around when approaching the raging wash. But this driver in a low slung Corvette went for it and was carried away downstream about 3 blocks in the raging water.

What most people find amazing is that car managed to float under the bridge and then go another 40 yards before it was stopped by that tree.

"And then he stood on that tree until the water subsided enough where they could walk him out."

"That guy escaped death probably. He's super lucky he didn't drown in that, the car was underwater, we almost walked by the Corvette because it was covered by dark muddy water," says neighbor Travis Michael.

Phoenix Fire Station 8 worked this water rescue and they agree, the guy with the ruined 2013 limited 60th anniversary edition Corvette, parked in the middle of a wash right now, is one lucky guy.

"He's very lucky his car stayed upright, he's very lucky his car hung up on a tree, because the circumstances could have been very different for him," says Phoenix Fire Capt. Jeff Schripsema.

Different in a bad way.
