Democrat Michelle Nunn enters Ga.'s US Senate race

ATLANTA -

BThe daughter of a former long-serving Georgia senator wants to go to Washington herself.  On Tuesday, Michelle Nunn joined the Democratic race for the Senate seat held by retiring Republican Saxby Chambliss.

Nunn is a non-profit executive and the daughter of former U.S. Sen. Sam Nunn.

The 2014 Senate race poses a challenge for Georgia Democrats.

Nunn has not previously held elective office, but she says that could be seen as a strength.

"I think that the idea of having someone who is coming from outside of the political arena coming into the political arena to say, ‘I want to do something different, I want to work together and have a collaborative spirit and get things done,' is what people are hungry for," Nunn said.

For years, Nunn has led the Points of Light volunteer organization.

Nunn says she plans to focus her campaign on economic needs.

"I'm going to be running on ideas, on the issues of fiscal responsibility and of opportunity and of jobs, and, you know, I think not so much around labels, but around practical solutions," Nunn said.

Another Democrat, Dr. Branko Radulovacki, is already in the race along with four Republicans: Congressmen Paul Broun and Phil Gingrey as well as former Secretary of State Karen Handel and Congressman Jack Kingston.

FOX 5 political analyst Matt Towery said Nunn's name will help her campaign.

"Well, the big name takes her to the Democratic primary…simply because those who run the Democratic Party are trying to make this a race that is not going to be very competitive in terms of deciding the nomination, and Sam Nunn served years and lots of roots in the Democratic Party," Towery said.

However, Towery said it will be a different story in the 2014 general election.

"The Nunn name has sort of disappeared from politics for a good number of years. Sen. Nunn left in the late 90s and not really been active in politics and a lot of folks don't remember that name," Towery said. "Her involvement in the charitable work that she's done will help her. I think that will help attract independent voters in the general election."
 
Nunn's father served as a Georgia senator for 24 years.
