NOVI, Mich. (WJBK) -

Jason Dorsch wants to be Novi's next mayor, but one elected official said he should quit the race after allegedly sending a racist email.

"I think we all had reactions to the Zimmerman verdict, but that was not one that I would anticipate coming from a mayoral candidate," said Novi Mayor Pro Tem Dave Staudt.

The first email that surfaced was sent to the Novi City Council. It claimed to be from Dorsch. It came after the decision in the controversial Florida case and read, "After the George Zimmerman verdict, I don't [want] Mexicans near my land. I don't want them fixing my road or anything else, understand?"

"The initial comments were racist. The second set of comments regarding our police department were ridiculous," Staudt said.

That email was also apparently sent by Dorsch and said he was raped by a Novi cop.

The chief of police said while they have had contact with Dorsch several times, he has never filed any type of complaint or made those allegations.

"You have freedom of speech. There are just consequences to freedom of speech, and in this situation, this is a candidate for mayor, and I would like to see that Mr. Dorsch withdraw his candidacy," Staudt said. "Obviously doesn't clearly reflect our community."

Novi Mayor Bob Gatt did not want to comment. The third candidate on the ballot agreed this was not representative of his community, but said ultimately it will be up to the voters to decide in November.

Dorsch did not want to say anything about those emails, but did say he still plans to run for mayor.
