DETROIT (WJBK) -

Kenneth King is out as chief judge in the latest shakeup at Detroit's 36th District Court. Supreme Court Justice Robert Young hand delivered the order Monday morning.

"Because I am unable or unwilling to provide significant leadership or assistance to Judge Talbot," King said.

King has been on the job since January 2012, not nearly enough time, he said, to revamp the court.

As for providing assistance to Judge Michael Talbot, King said he never wanted it.

Talbot was appointed to fix the court's financial woes, including a $5 million budget shortfall.

King's removal comes as the court is undergoing a major overhaul. Talbot laid off roughly 100 employees and farmed out work to suburban courts.

"The result of that is utter chaos," King said. "Our lines are longer... people are confused more so now than ever before as to where they're going."

"We've had a number of layoffs, and now we don't have people to work the various jobs. We have people in positions who have bumped into positions that they have no idea how to work, and we have no one there to train them."

We contacted Talbot's office, but he refused to comment on King's removal.

The Michigan Supreme Court said there is no timetable to appoint a successor.

As for King, he will remain at 36th District Court as an elected judge.

------

THE ORDER:

July 22, 2013
ADM File No. 2013-01
Removal of Chief Judge of the 36th District Court (Wayne County, City of Detroit)
______________________________

The Court, having been apprised of the financial and operational crisis of the 36th District Court and further made aware by the May 20, 2013 report of National Center for State Courts of the inability of the current administration of the 36th District Court to address the crisis, appointed Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Michael J. Talbot as its Special Administrator to exercise superintending control on its behalf to resolve the fiscal and operational problems of the 36th District Court.

It further appearing that the current chief judge, Judge Kenneth King, remains unable or unwilling to provide significant leadership or assistance to Judge Talbot, the Court hereby removes Judge King as chief judge of the 36th District Court.

This order is effective immediately.
