$10 million for victim of Chicago police abuse

CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

The city of Chicago is poised to pay out $10 million in compensation to a man who spent more than two decades in prison for a double murder he didn't commit.

Forty-7-year-old Eric Caine's conviction in the 1986 slayings was largely based on a false confession he made after being physically abused by a detective.

The Chicago Sun-Times says the settlement is one of the largest to come out of the investigation into police torture under former Lt. Jon Burge, now serving 4 ½ years in prison.

A doctor who treated Caine says he was hit so hard his eardrum ruptured. Caine spent 25 years in prison before he was exonerated.

A City Council committee approved the settlement Friday. The full council is expected to approve it next week.
