California Lawmakers Push for Florida Boycott

Posted: Updated:

Member of the California Black Legislative Caucus want to see Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law repealed and they're urging a boycott of Florida.

"Over the years, everyone realized that the rallies, the protests, they have limited returns," says Asm. Chris Holden (D-Pasadena). "A boycott seemed to make sense for us to explore."

Holden, who has four teenage sons, says he wants to send a message to Florida politicians.

"When you think about how segregation laws were so prominent in the South, a lot of pressure came from the outside to move us in a different direction and create avenues for change," says Holden. "We're hoping that we can do something similar to force change."

Some Florida politicians also want to see the law overhauled.

At a press conference today, Florida Senator Chris Smith said: "This bill actually encourages people to shoot their way out of situations and that's not how we live in a civilized society."

Holden says he plans to introduce the resolution to boycott Florida in August, when the assembly returns from its summer break.

Fox 11 investigative producer Heidi Cuda has this story.

The recent death of a man from Staten Island while he was being arrested by NYPD officers is calling into question a police crackdown on petty offenses to discourage more serious crime. Critics say policing based on the so-called "broken windows" theory can needlessly put people at risk and fuel tensions in the city's minority communities.

The number alone is shocking. In one South Los Angeles zip code, there are 240 registered sex offenders living there. You can get this information off of Megan’s law website, required by state law, named after seven-year-old Megan Kanka, a New Jersey girl who was raped and killed by a known registered sex offender who had moved across the street from the family without their knowledge. The idea is to prevent that from happening again, and of course it’s a noble goal.
