Does Talking About Yourself Feel Almost As Good As Sex?

Posted: Updated:

Know someone who talks about themselves all of the time? A new study shows that talking about yourself is as pleasurable as sex.

With people spending an estimated 40 percent of their time talking about themselves, Harvard University Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience Lab researchers wanted to know one thing – why?

They wondered why people like the sound of their own voice so much. Could it have something to do with parts of their brain associated with pleasure and reward?

What they found was that study participants talking about themselves, there was – along with increased activity in the part of the brain generally linked with self-related thought – a release of dopamine, which helps control the brain's reward and pleasure sections.

A second experiment had participants answer questions about themselves and other people, and when the answers were shared, the brain activity increased more so than when the responses were kept private.
