Dan Gilbert to offer to buy unfinished Wayne Co. Jail site

Once again, the founder of Quicken Loans is setting his sights on big time real estate in Detroit.

According to the Detroit News, Rock Ventures LLC, a branch of Dan Gilbert's empire, will make an offer Thursday to buy the unfinished Wayne County Jail site at Gratiot and Madison.

Last month, FOX 2's Charlie LeDuff confirmed that the county was in talks to tear down the jail, which is about $100 million over budget, and sell the land along with the old jail, the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice and the police headquarters to Gilbert to recoup some loses.

Then the county would take another $100 million in borrowed money to retrofit the old Mound prison facility and move everything there.

Gilbert's camp last month confirmed the talks as well.

"These are unprecedented times in Detroit. The level of optimism, commitment, investment and spirit of collaboration has never been greater, providing great context for discussion around the relocation of the jail and criminal justice complex out of downtown Detroit," we were told in a statement.

The move would give Gilbert a key plot of land that could connect his Greektown properties to his development efforts along the Woodward corridor.

The county has a 4 p.m. deadline Thursday for developers to submit proposals.
