WATERFORD, Mich. (WJBK) -

A family is now without a husband and father after what was supposed to be a way to cool off Wednesday afternoon on Cass Lake.

"He hadn't been drinking and wasn't on any medication, things that might have suppressed his ability to swim. So might have just gotten into a bad spot," says Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.

His family says the 59-year-old was a good swimmer. Witnesses say he appeared to be having fun with his family, then ventured out looking fine, but then something went wrong.

"He looked like he was flopping his arms around like he couldn't swim," says Edward Leser.

"He started just going up and down, his head in the water, and then he disappeared," says Ali Charara, who called 911.

Police assisted by divers pulled the man's body from the water two hours later.
