Yankee Air Museum wants to call Willow Run Bomber Plant home

YPSILANTI, Mich. (WJBK) -

Nearly 9,000 B-24s were built at the long abandoned Willow Run Bomber Plant now slated for demolition unless the history and aviation buffs at the Yankee Air Museum can save a small part of it.

"It's a piece of our national history. This was the largest plant in the world -- five million square feet," says Ray Hunter.

The plan is to move the Yankee Air Museum into 175,000 square feet of the plant and save the end of the assembly line.

"Now we have a chance to get everybody under one roof and make this a truly wonderful experience for the people of Southeastern Michigan to come and see," Hunter says.

"We preserve the point at which the finished aircraft left the building to contribute to the war effort," says Grant Trigger.

It is a huge effort. The Michigan Aerospace Foundation must raise $5 million by August 1.

"We need a lot of money. We're all behind this, but we need some big shooters to step up," Hunter says.

They have already raised $3 million, but they are in need of much more and quickly to save a space so important in history.

"This is the core of America's effort to do what they did in World War II," says donor Kirk Profit. "The workers, the planes that they built obviously were vital to the success that we achieved."

"This is where the war was won. Production actually won World War II for the United States and its allies," Hunter says.
