Manhattan's priciest dishes

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

New York City is known for its delicious food, but it can get pretty pricey. Just for fun, we went to find the most decadent and expensive dishes at some of New York's top restaurants.

We started at Norma's, located inside Le Parker Merdien Hotel in Midtown Manhattan. Its brunch menu includes the "Zillion Dollar Lobster Frittata," which will set you back $1,000. So what makes this little egg dish so special? In addition to six eggs, mega chunks of lobster tail, potatoes, and a special lobster sauce, it's packed with 10 ounces of American Sturgeon caviar. This caviar makes up the bulk of the cost, checking in at about $650. This high-end omelet is made to order about once a month.

Norma's also sells a $100 version of the delicious frittata for those who want the taste, but can't shell out the big cash, with only one ounce of caviar.

Chef Emile Castillo says the dish is known word wide.

"We even had telephone calls from England," Castillo says. "Somebody wanted to propose to his girlfriend and wanted to know exactly how to make it."

Next, we continued our tour at the Old Homestead Steakhouse in the Meatpacking District, where we sampled some of world's best wagyu beef. The 12-ounce New York strip steak is priced at $350.

Marc Sherry, co-owner of the restaurant, raves about the dish: "This is the most marbled beef in the world. It's like having a 4th of July in your mouth, the flavor bursts."

Old Homestead Steakhouse was the first restaurant in the city to import the beef and only serves the highest grade of Kobe available.

Don't feel too bad for the cows. Before they end up on your plate, the Japanese cows are pampered with hand massages and rubbed down with straw three times a day and hand-fed beer from baby-like bottles.

Sherry says the beef just melts in your mouth "like a food orgasm. Every bite is perfection."

Next, we headed to Bice in Midtown, to check out the 2013 Lobster Tagliolini, a four-course meal that can be yours for (you guessed it) $2,013.

The main dish is made with two pounds of lobster, wild mushrooms, and lots of shaved black truffles.

Bice's chef says: "The truffle cost eight hundred dollars a pound so it's unique" it's kind of an aphrodisiac, and really flavors the dish."

It is served on a limited edition signed Gianni Versace plate. It was signed by the famed fashion designer before his death in 1997. After you finish the pasta, the plate is yours to keep. The price of this whole meal is more about the piece of art to remind you of the experience.

Bice's GM Peter Guimaraes says the restaurant sells more of the lesser priced Lobster Tagliolini (minus the limited edition signed Gianni Versace plate). But Guimaraes says some their affluent diners love to indulge on the $2,013 dish!

To have it on a piece of art that was created by one of the world's best designers creates that special atmosphere for the meal and that's why the price is so high," Guimaraes says.

And who could forget about dessert? How about the most expensive sundae in the world? The Guinness World Record's Golden Opulence Sundae -- $1,000 -- is served at New York City's landmark restaurant, Serendipity 3.

All the ingredients are specially ordered and flown in, which is why you have to order the sundae 48 hours ahead of time. The Tahitian vanilla ice cream is infused with Madagascar vanilla bean. Layers of 23-carat edible gold leaf coat the sundae dish and the ice cream scoops giving diners the decadent experience of eating gold!

"It's the same gold leaf that Michelangelo used at the Sistine Chapel," says Serendipity owner Stephen Bruce says.

The sundae is topped with candied fruits from the streets of Paris, gilded Jordan almonds, and passion fruit dessert caviar. The chocolate sauce is a mix of the two rarest chocolates in the world, found off the coast of Venezuela. The sundae is served in a Baccarat crystal goblet (that you get to keep) with a 23-karat gold spoon. Generally ordered for special occasions, the Golden Opulence sundae is made about once a month.

Bruce says customers range from newlywed couples to sheiks from the Middle East!

If you wanted to try all four dishes in one day, it would cost you a whopping $4,363. But the feeling you get when digging in to these delectable dishes is priceless.
