New state program rates child care facilities

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

The state has launched a program to help parents find the right child care facility for their children. It's called Quality Rated, a voluntary system that measures the level of care and education provided.

The Sunshine House in Kennesaw was the recipient of a three-star rating in the new program from Georgia's Bright From the Start.

"It didn't take us as much to get into the program because of the simple fact of we were already pretty high on our marks," said Ryan Leavell, the assistant director at Sunshine House.

Quality Rated schools have their staff, nutrition plans, physical activity, learning practices and teacher student ratios evaluated.

"We strive for that excellence and we are always doing what we need to do to change our roles and to provide the best quality care for our children," Leavell said.

Georgia's First Lady, Sandra Deal,  spoke directly to the Quality Rated providers during an event to announce the program at the state Capitol.

"We see the enthusiasm… we see the eagerness in those faces of those children because they're engaged and they love learning. And we're so glad that you're giving them that opportunity," Sandra Deal said.

Nearly 1,300 child care facilities are participating in the state's Quality Rated program, but only about 200 have been rated so far.

Robert De Niro is a family man, a filmmaker, an entrepreneur and one of my favorite actors of all time. He's also a co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival, which has more to see than ever before. De Niro wears just as many hats on screen as he does in real life. The father of six starred in six films last year, owns four restaurants and a hotel, and still finds time each spring for the Tribeca Film Festival, Lower Manhattan's annual cinematic showcase.
