Thunderstorm's strong winds rake Phoenix area

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

Crews are cleaning up after a brief thunderstorm's strong winds damaged more than a dozen new homes under construction and toppled numerous trees in neighborhoods in southeastern parts of the Phoenix area.

The storm late Monday also downed power poles, and the Salt River Project reported that 4,500 customers were without power at one point.

Hours after the storm, some homes still didn't have power.

Five poles were down on Sossaman between Elliot and Guadalupe.

Crews worked through the night to restore power to the area and almost all power was restored by noon.

The National Weather Service said one microburst near the Ahwatukee area of southeast Phoenix carried winds up to 60 mph while one in the nearby suburb of Chandler had winds up to 70 mph.

The damaged homes under construction are located near Desert Vista High School, which had its football scoreboard knocked down.

Some incomplete homes in Ahwatukee had roofs blown apart, while others collapsed.

Wind damaged awnings and roofs on mobile homes in Mesa and a tractor-trailer overturned during heavy rain on Interstate 10.
