Police: Pickup truck driven into Detroit River in Wyandotte

WYANDOTTE, Mich. (WJBK) -

Police in Wyandotte believe a pickup truck was intentionally driven into the Detroit River on Monday night. The person behind-the-wheel was possibly a woman, but it is unclear if anyone else was inside the vehicle.

"We got the call at 8:47 p.m., and we had several witnesses that have made several statements relating to the type of vehicle and how many people are in the vehicle. We know it was a pickup. We've had several people say there was one person in the vehicle, and we've had several people say there might have been three people in the vehicle," said Police Chief Dan Grant.

"What we do know is just south of Oak Street in the parking lot, a vehicle was parked there, and witnesses all concur that they revved the engine, had the windows down on the red pickup truck and then drove about a hundred feet flooring the vehicle up the curb across 75 feet of grass and through the steel railing into the Detroit River. Because of the speed, it went approximately 40 yards out into the river. With the six mile an hour current, it drifted south about another 75 yards and then the witnesses said it went nose down and sank very quickly."

The chief told us one person witnessed the driver consuming a beer and throwing the container out of the window beforehand.

A recovery effort was underway late Monday with the Coast Guard, dive teams, police and fire all on the scene. Around 11 p.m., the chief said sonar equipment had detected something and dive teams were going into the water to investigate.

If an iced coffee from Dunkin' Donuts is part of your afternoon routine, expect a nudge to buy a cookie or doughnut you didn't plan on. Dunkin' Brands CEO Nigel Travis said in a phone interview Thursday that the company is pushing to get its cashiers to "upsell" to afternoon customers. It's part of an effort to increase sales after stores have emptied out after the morning rush.
