Crook Breaks Into Apartment, Steals Valuables And Pet

PHILADELPHIA -

The search is on for the crooks that broke into a center city apartment. They took cameras, jewelry, and even a TV. But one thing these heart-less robbers took can never be replaced.

Betty, a Chinese crested mix, was "dog-napped" from her foster home on Friday.

The cries from this little pooch haunt Ali Rans of Rittenhouse Square.

"I don't want her to be hurt and I know she's scared," says Ali.

Betty is a rescue dog in Ali's care for a short time. Despite the short time together, they already have a bond that Ali can't imagine living without.

"She's six pounds," says Ali. "She's this little tiny ball of energy. I just need to see her again."

It was Friday night. Ali says she came home to find her door pried open. Her TV was gone. Her mac book and several cameras were missing as well.

"The drawers were opened. The drawers on the desk were opened," she describes.

But all of that soon became trivial.

"Then I started calling for Betty and didn't hear her," she recalls.

The crook that broke in also stole Betty! And it's turned Ali's life upside-down. "Every night we would come home. I would tell her she's safe here, everything's going to be fine," says Ali. "When you come home, you realize she wasn't safe. I'm hopeful she will come back because it really hits you."

Ali continues, "Just feeling for her. She's scared of people and she's scared of loud noises. She's timid when she doesn't know you."

Police say Ali is the latest victim in a series of burglaries that have rocked her neighbors in recent months. But the theft of a dog has them in disbelief.

"You really do feel victimized [but] this really upset me," says a neighbor.

Ali is posting flyers with Betty's picture, hoping someone finds her. And she checks her iPhone frequently for leads.

The main thing right now is trying to stay positive.

"If I start going with the worst scenarios, why they would have taken her, I just can't go there," reflects Ali.
