CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A West Side Austin neighborhood man is dead after attempting a backflip Sunday off a breakwater at a Near North Side beach.

Terrence Muldin, 54, of the 5000 block of West Augusta Boulevard was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital just before 8 p.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Muldin was attempting a diving maneuver off a retaining wall near North Avenue Beach in the 1500 block of North Lake Shore Drive at 7:20 p.m. when he accidentally struck his head on the concrete, police said.

Muldin fell on the rocks by the lakefront while doing a backflip for a family member, according to a source.
