Summer Sales: Some items are cheaper if you wait

Posted: Updated:

Sometimes it pays to procrastinate! July is a great month for sales, but not all of them are worth hitting.

"Cars tend to come out with new models at the end of the summer, so if you're buying a new vehicle, that hot new ride, you want to drive around town. You actually should wait until August when the price of the old one will go down and you have the option," said Ross Kenneth Urken, personal finance editor for TheStreet.com.

While it may seem like a good idea to get a head start on school supplies, it actually pays to procrastinate. If you wait until August, prices on writing materials and other things will be significantly reduced.

At retailers like Office Max and Staples, you can stock up on pencils for a penny; glue sticks for as cheap as 10 cents; and notebooks for a mere quarter.  Laptops will be cheaper too.

"Laptops tend to be most expensive during the summer. We experience a few sales in anticipation of student rush. back to school time, but you really want to wait until October when you can get as much as a $100 off that new Mac Book Pro," said Urken.

Another item to avoid buying in July is sunglasses. According to DealNews.com, some of the big chains  don't hold their best sales until fall and winter.

It also pays to procrastinate when buying a barbeque grill or a camera.

"Digital cameras actually tend to be cheapest in February when the new models come out. So for that Fuji and Canon, just don't buy it during the summer if you can help it," said Urken.

"Outdoor furnishing grills really command a premium during the summer months. Everyone's in Home Depot and Lowe's buying that new Weber, so you want to wait until after Labor Day to get some deals with as much as 75 percent off," added Urken.

Many retailers offer deep discounts -- like the ones you see on "Black Friday" -- right in the middle of the summer.

Toys "R" Us has been known to offer "free shipping through Saturday" during some weeks in July, as well as "buy one, get one 50 percent off."

You can also get summer deals on line.  Target has a long running  sale on line.  At Target.com/blackfriday, you can get up to 40 percent off and  even snag deals on certain products days before the official sale launches.
