NEW YORK (AP) - Officials say an 84-year-old patient died after getting a transfusion of the wrong blood type at a New York City hospital.
The city's Health and Hospitals Corp. said the patient died at Coney Island Hospital on June 9.
The Daily News reports that the hospital's lab misidentified the patient's blood type.
The state Health Department has ordered the city-run hospital to send patients' blood elsewhere for testing.
In a statement, the HHC said "our deepest condolences go out to the family."
According to the News, such errors typically occur in about 1 of every 14,000 transfusions.
