Step right up: SkyView Atlanta Ferris wheel opens

On Tuesday, Skyview Atlanta -- a 200-foot high, skyscraping Ferris wheel -- opened to much fanfare in downtown Atlanta, across from Centennial Olympic Park. Some people camped out as early as 7 a.m. to be among the first to get a ride.

After the ceremonial ribbon cutting about noon, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and City Council members took the first official ride on Atlanta's newest local attraction.

"When you get to see Atlanta from that vantage point, it just makes you feel good about the city when you see how well it's laid out and how much is going on," Reed said. "You can see all over on to the Ponce de Leon corner, you can see up north to Buckhead. You can see, of course, west Atlanta. It just gives you a real sense of pride."

Crews spent the morning leading up the long-awaited opening making all of the final security checks and taking the wheel on dry runs in preparation for Tuesday's historic moment.

Atlanta's newest attraction is located in the 100 block of Luckie Street, directly beside Tabernacle Atlanta. The ride will complete four revolutions per ride and last about 15 minutes, according to developers.

FOX 5 cameras were there as they installed the special VIP gondola, which features an all-leather interior with a glass floor. In all, there are Ferris wheel totes 42 gondolas that each hold up to six passengers.

The cost is $13.50 ($14.45, including tax) for adults, $8.50 ($9.10, including tax) for children and $12.15 for military ($13, including tax).

Boasting the 'You can see Atlanta from here' slogan, the 200-foot high attraction gives passengers a sweeping birds-eye view of the city.

The attraction will be open most days 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with an extra hour at night on Saturday.
