Dogs attack miniature horse used for therapy

FAIRBURN, Ga. -

UPDATE: Sasquatch passed away from his injuries on Saturday morning. Kim Conner wrote on her Facebook:

"Everyone's prayers and words mean so much. Sometimes the answer to our prayers ins not the one we want to hear. BUT it is always the right answer. All our prayers were answered in a way. The poor little guy in no longer in pain.

It is with a heavy heart I reach out to all who have been following our little horse's brave fight for life. This morning at Auburn University he lost his battle. He has succumbed to his injuries, In true Sasquatch style he went on his own terms and in his sleep. The vets at Auburn were right there and it was very fast. Our hearts are broken and we will miss our sweet sweet little man.

I am at a loss for words."

A miniature horse used in therapy for children was severely injured by a pack of dogs.

The Conners found their family pet, Sasquatch, surrounded by four stray dogs early Friday.

"It was unreal. I've had horses for 40 years and I've never seen anything like this," said Kim Conner.

Kim Conner tracked down the dogs -- now quarantined at animal control – and then drove Sasquatch to Auburn University Hospital.

"He's extreme critical. They've given him about a 50/50 chance," Conner said.

Little Sasquatch - who only stands 33 inches tall - is a big part of the Fairywood Thicket Farm's therapy program. He works with children and disabled veterans.

Farm owners say that recently, the area has become overrun by far too many strays. They hope their scare sends a strong message to those abandoning their animals.

"The problem is people keep dumping these animals out here and we're left to clean up the mess, and you don't know what you're going to get. And now my little pony paid the price for somebody who didn't take care of their dog," said Kim Conner.

Fidelity Bank in Sandy Springs has set up a fund through the nonprofit for Sasquatch to help with vet bills. The farm will likely face thousands of dollars in vet bills. If Sasquatch survives, the mini-horse will need at least six months of rehab therapy. Donations can be made to the account for Fairywood Thicket Equestrian Center, Inc.
