Atlanta residents watching George Zimmerman trial closely

ATLANTA -

The George Zimmerman murder trial in Florida is being watched closely in metro Atlanta and across the country. Some people are expecting disturbances if Zimmerman is acquitted.

A jury of six women will decide if Zimmerman is guilty of second degree murder, manslaughter or acted in self-defense when he shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

Talk radio host/community activist Derrick Boazman took calls on Thursday at WAOK-FM about the trial. Callers to that station were skewed decidedly against an acquittal for Zimmerman. Some predicted that a not guilty verdict could spell trouble in communities across America.

"There's not going to be any rioting or anything like that, but there are going to be problems," said one caller.

Boazman says his concern isn't about rioting or looting, but about the future of young African-American men, which is part of the reason he's holding a rally on Friday.

"For all of us to get greater invested in lives of these young brothers and that we are Trayvon Martin and that his life will mean something if some other child will get a break because some adult will invest in their lives," Boazman said.

Boazman believes the Zimmerman case highlights injustices against young black men.

Atlanta resident Sonja Allen doesn't see it that way.

"I don't really think the race issue is the deal here. I think it relies on what has happened with the facts," said Allen.

Those facts will soon go to the jury, which will exonerate or convict George Zimmerman for the killing of Trayvon Martin.

Boazman's rally is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Iconium Baptist Church in Atlanta.
