ACWORTH, Ga. -

A Jeep crashed into a historic building in downtown Acworth on Thursday.

The Historic Acworth Antiques building located on Northside Drive suffered substantial damage after the driver of the Jeep apparently lost control when the vehicle's brakes failed.

"I looked up and there was a Jeep inside the residence there -- it says antiques but people live there. It was just loaded with bricks on the top and the side," Annette Reeves said.

The Jeep's driver was not injured, but the passenger was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Jocelyn Simpson owns a business next door and was afraid someone was hurt.

"I can't imagine how anyone could actually run into the building and cause that kind of damage," said Simpson.

Fortunately, no one was inside the building, which serves as a residence and a storage space.

Authorities said that the building has been there since the 1890s.

"It's pretty devastating to see a building that was built more than a 115 years ago suffer damage like this. It's something that the city won't soon forget," said Acworth Police Capt. Mark Chatham.

Firefighters knocked down loose bricks while engineers looked at the damage.

"We have to shut the road down until structural integrity of the building can be checked to ensure it won't collapse," Chatham said.

The owner of the building reportedly works in historical reconstruction, which could come in handy in repairing the damage.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
