Neighbors: The cost of another Family Dollar too high

ATLANTA -

It's the self-titled Family Store that isn't getting a very warm welcome from one local community here in Atlanta.

The chain discount store would like to build a new store in a northwest Atlanta neighborhood. But, as Good Day Atlanta's Tacoma Perry discovered, the community is fight the proposed move.

"We do not need them on every major intersection," said Councilwoman Felicia Moore (District 9), who's district includes the community in question.

Currently, there are four Family Dollar stores within two miles of each other in the District 9 area. The company has plans to build one more at the intersection of Bolton Road and James Jackson Parkway.

Many of the residents in that area, however, are putting their collective foot down.

Ashley Rivera, who lives in the Riverside neighborhood, said, "When you drive through our neighborhood now, when you look at the properties and some of the businesses that are already here, you may get a certain stereotype of how our neighborhood is and it doesn't reflect how our neighborhood is."

Rivera lives less than a mile away from one Family Door location. The proposed Family Dollar store would also be less than a mile from her. She and other neighbors say they want more diversity in the types of businesses that setting up shop in their areas.

While Family Dollar is a discount store, critics of the new location say those kinds of stores attract crime.

Rivera said, "We're working hard to improve many issues in the neighborhood with code enforcement. The neighborhood is really changing for the better."

Good Day Atlanta reached out to Family Dollar about their location strategy. A company spokesman said, "In many cases, our customers may not have cars, or they may be limited as to how far they can travel which is why we strive to locate our stores in areas that are convenient for them. In regards to crime, please know that the safety and security of our customers and team members is our first priority."

People in the Riverside community have started a petition and are appealing to Family Dollar representatives with the message – enough is enough.

Councilwoman Moore said, "Of course, it's needed. People shop there. I shop there. But, you don't need to have them at every location in your community."

Sometimes less can be more! A small space shouldn't limit your garden or your imagination—hanging baskets, containers, window boxes, espaliered fruit trees….they're all great ways to made a big gardening impact – even on the most limited high rise balcony!
