Survey: TV remains main news source for Americans

Polling released this week by Gallup Politics identified TV as the go-to medium for U.S. news consumption, with the Internet and print publications lagging far behind.

Survey respondents were asked, “What would you say is your main source of news about current events in the U.S. and around the world?” The top responses were television (55 percent), Internet (21 percent), print (9 percent) and radio (6 percent).

Among TV news outlets, respondents most frequently cited Fox News (8 percent), CNN (7 percent) and “local TV news” (4 percent).

"If the current media preferences of young adults are any indicator of the future, the data offer good news for TV, but bad news for print media," Lydia Saad wrote for Gallup. "Half of adults aged 18 to 29 and half aged 30 to 49 identify television as their main source of news. This is nearly double the rate for the Internet even among these more tech-savvy populations."
