RenCen, Hart Plaza fountains shut off for summer

Detroit seems to be missing some summertime staples this year. The General Motors Plant fountain at the Renaissance Center and the Horace E. Dodge and Son Memorial Fountain at Hart plaza are both inoperable for the time being, and no one knows when -- or if -- they will be turned back on.

The fountain at Hart Plaza is turned off mostly because of the work of vandals. The city of Detroit says the nearby bathrooms were trashed, and the fountain's copper pipes were stolen. In all, the damages add up to around one million dollars.

"This is heartbreaking to me because it's such a vital resource for the children of the city, and when I see it not operating especially on days like today where it's so hot, it really does break my heart," Detroit-goer Roger Dyjak tells Fox 2.

Sandra Lee adds, "With all the hard work the city's putting in to give the children so many different opportunities to play downtown, to actually make it a safe area - for it to be down? I think that's very sad."

The city has already spend $400,000 to make repairs. It says the job will be finished once more money is available.

As for the fountain behind the RenCen, water still runs through the floor of the fountain, but no water is coming out. GM officials told Fox 2's Alexis Wiley it is down for maintenance, but could not say when it will be back up and running.

    The Federal Aviation Administration has banned U.S. carriers from flying to Israel's main airport for 24 hours. The FAA made the announcement at about 12:40 p.m. on Tuesday. This comes after two U.S. airlines cancelled all flights to Israel until further notice following a rocket landing near the Ben-Gurion Airport earlier in the day.
