Yarnell Hill Fire 100% contained, residents return to homes

YARNELL, Ariz. -

A mountain highway that runs through the area where 19 firefighters died protecting a former gold-rush town reopened Wednesday as residents sifted through the rubble of their homes. Officials later announced the fire was 100% contained.

The Yarnell Hill Fire, where 19 members of the Prescott-based Granite Mountain Hotshots died, has burned about 13 square miles and destroying 114 structures. It was fully contained Wednesday night.

Residents were allowed back in this week, and the road through the area reopened to the public on Wednesday.

We talked to residents who were trying to salvage what they could as they prepared for life after the wildfire. Only about one-third of residents had home insurance.

Also Wednesday, there was a procession on I-17 for 3 of the hotshots who were being flown out of state to be laid to rest. The three white hearses were led by a fire engine.
