PHOENIX (AP) - Health officials have confirmed three cases of West Nile virus in Maricopa County so far this month.

County Department of Public Health officials said Tuesday that all three people contracted West Nile encephalitis. That's the most serious form of the disease, but the three are expected to survive.

The names, ages and hometowns of the three aren't being released.

Maricopa County had 88 lab-confirmed West Nile cases last year compared to 45 lab-confirmed cases in 2011.

In 2010, Maricopa County recorded its second-worst West Nile virus season with 115 lab-confirmed cases.

The worst season was in 2004 with 355 confirmed cases and 14 deaths.

The virus is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito.

It can cause symptoms ranging from mild flu-like symptoms to severe neurological symptoms.

For more information on West Nile virus, public health assistance, to report green pools or file any mosquito related complaint, call (602) 506-0700 or visit www.maricopa.gov/wnv.
